Eating Healthy on a Budget

Have you or someone you know ever complained about how expensive eating healthy can be? There is a way to fit a healthy diet into a tight budget, and that is what we will be going over today. Even if you implement just a few of these suggestions, you should be able to cut down on food costs.

Meal Prep

Meal prepping means planning your meals out in advance. Most people do weekly meal prep so their meals stay fresh. Doing this gives you a plan and a grocery list, both of which help you stay on budget and prevent splurging on expensive meals or takeout. It can also prevent you from throwing out expired food, which wastes money. Meal prepping saves money and makes it easy to eat healthy.

Plan for Leftovers

Make more than you plan on eating in one sitting. This gives you a quick, easy meal for when you do not have time to cook. Put it in the microwave for a minute or two and you are ready to go. This helps prevent you from spending money on takeout and keeps you on track with your diet.

Know What You Are Buying

Instead of processed, name-brand foods, go for generic, whole foods. These are often cheaper, higher quantity, and to the same standard as name-brand foods. For produce, buy what is in season or frozen — in-season produce is typically cheaper, and frozen lasts longer since you only take out what you want to eat (frozen also works well for smoothies). For meat, limit the amount you eat or buy cheaper cuts. Ground meat can be bought in large quantities and works well in a variety of meals.

The Bottom Line

There are plenty of ways to reduce your food costs — it may just mean buying generic instead of name brand. Having a plan helps you stay on track and keeps you from unknowingly racking up your food bill. Leftovers curb the temptation to order takeout and are great for a quick meal. Increasing your knowledge of what you are buying is beneficial for more than just price: it helps you find the best foods for you and keeps you thinking about calories and macronutrients.
